TD Ken O'Flynn Condemns Proposal to Abolish Dáil Prayer

Independent Ireland Chairperson Ken O'Flynn TD has announced his strong opposition to the recent proposal by the Social Democrats and Labour Party to eliminate the traditional prayer recited before each Dáil session. This suggestion disregards Ireland's profound Christian heritage and the values that have shaped our nation.

O'Flynn TD emphasised the significance of this tradition, stating, "No matter how much it may irk the Social Democrats, Labour and similar parties of the hard left, we are a Christian nation built on Christian values." He further questioned the proponents' cultural sensitivity: "I wonder how their suggestions would be received if they were to visit an Islamic country and suggest banning the call to prayer."

Ireland's identity is deeply intertwined with its Christian roots, evident in our historical sites such as the monasteries and abbeys that dot our landscape. These landmarks stand as testaments to the legacy of our ancestors. The Dáil prayer is more than a procedural formality; it is a reflection of our nation's respect for its cultural and religious foundations.

O'Flynn TD continued, "Eradicating this practice not only undermines our traditions but also disrespects the beliefs of the majority of Irish citizens. For parties that preach so often about inclusivity, they seem to be forgetting to include the beliefs of the majority in their attempts to undermine Christian values at every opportunity"

"I will be calling for a dedicated prayer room in Leinster House for members of all denominations and none, to take time for prayer and reflection, similar to the rooms provided in airports all over the world. In an increasingly divided world, I firmly believe that more prayer, reflection and understanding is needed not less"

He called upon all members of the Oireachtas to recognize the importance of preserving this longstanding tradition, which honours the faith and history of Ireland.
