Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice was first elected in the 2014 bi election with a total of 14,881 votes an was returned to the Dail in 2016 before topping the poll in the 2020 General election having been elected on the first count with over 13,000 first preference votes.
Deputy Fitzmaurice joined Independent Ireland in February 2024. On joining Independent Ireland he said “Too often independents and new parties fragment into increasingly narrow camps when what is needed is unity, dialogue and occasionally compromise.
“I didn’t want to see that happen here. I believe it is better for voters to have a clear, unambiguous choice at election time. I believe that Independent Ireland can be that choice. We are the party of common sense solutions for this and future generations.” TD is Leader and Co-Founder of Independent Ireland. The party was set up to deliver an alternative to existing political parties who many feel have lost touch with the electorate on key issues across Ireland.
Deputy Fitzmaurice was instrumental in delivering results across the West of Ireland in the parties first election outing in 2024. In the European election, Independent Ireland's three candidates received 108,685 first-preference votes, coming fourth behind Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and Sinn Féin. Ciaran Mullooly was elected in Midlands–North-West, with Niall Boylan coming fifth on the last count in the four-seat Dublin constituency. In the local elections, the party ranked seventh in first-preference votes, with 51,562 votes, and elected 23 of its 61 candidates. The party elected six councillors to Galway County Council and four councillors to the Cork County Council, and became the third largest party on both councils. Of its thirteen incumbents, eleven were re-elected.
