Government's Attempt to Undermine Ceann Comhairle's Ruling: A Disturbing Deference to Michael Lowry

Michael Collins TD has questioned what he describes as a "troubling display of political maneuvering" following what he describes as "the government attempting to subvert the clear and decisive ruling of Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy regarding Dáil speaking rights." following the news that The Government is pushing to create a group of TDs who are “not necessarily” Government or Opposition.

The Independent Ireland leader stated this afternoon "This action raises serious questions about the undue influence wielded by Independent TD Michael Lowry over this Government. What is going on behind the scenes here ? We had finally put this nonsense to bed and are getting on with the important work of serving our constituencies on both sides of the house, and now the issue has reared its ugly head again - I want to know why?"

:Two weeks ago, Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy ruled that the Regional Independent TDs, predominantly government supporters, would not be granted opposition speaking rights

"This decision thankfully preserved the integrity of the Dail and ensured that TDs supporting the Government could not pretend they were in opposition voices".

Despite this clear ruling, reports indicate that the government is now seeking to bend the rules to accommodate Deputy Lowry and his associates

"Such actions not only undermine the authority of the Ceann Comhairle but also erode public trust in our democracy" said Collins

Michael Lowry's political career has been marred by controversy. The Moriarty Tribunal found that he had an "insidious and pervasive" influence over the awarding of a mobile phone licence to Esat Digifone

Despite these findings, Deputy Lowry has managed to maintain a position of influence, raising concerns about the government's willingness to acquiesce to his demands.

"The current situation prompts a critical question: What leverage does Michael Lowry hold over this Government that compels it to contravene established parliamentary rules? The Ceann Comhairle's ruling was unambiguous, and any attempt to circumvent it is a blatant affront to the principles of fairness " Said Collins

Independent Ireland demand that the government respect the Ceann Comhairle's ruling and cease any efforts to grant undue privileges to its supporters masquerading as opposition members.

The integrity of our democracy depends on adherence to the rules and respect for the roles designated within our parliamentary system. The government's current course of action is a disservice to the Irish people and sets a dangerous precedent.
