Ciaran Mullooly appointed Vice Chair of new EU Housing Crisis Committee to shape policy, funding, and advocate for Ireland’s needs.
Midlands-North West MEP Ciaran Mullooly has been appointed Vice Chair of the European Parliament’s new Housing Crisis Committee, a key initiative aimed at tackling housing challenges across Europe. This appointment provides a platform for Mullooly to bring Ireland’s housing issues to the forefront of EU policy making.
Highlighting the severity of the crisis in his constituency, Mullooly pointed to alarming figures: “In Kildare, over 10,000 people are currently on social housing lists. Meath had 3,800 people waiting for a home at the end of last year, and Galway has 4,500 people still in need. These numbers show how this crisis is crippling family life and placing immense burdens on young people and grandparents alike.”
The Housing Crisis Committee is part of a broader EU effort to address housing shortages, affordability issues, and barriers to construction. With the recent appointment of a European Commissioner for Housing, this marks the first time the European Parliament is taking coordinated action on housing at this scale.
“This is an important role,” Mullooly said. “I will be working to find practical solutions to Ireland’s housing crisis while contributing to Europe-wide policies that deliver real results. We need answers that work for families and communities.”
To ensure local voices are heard, Mullooly announced he will visit Navan, County Meath, on Friday, 14 February, to meet with residents and hear their concerns. “If you have a housing issue or suggestion, I want to hear from you,” he said.
