Fitzmaurice slams Government Misinformation and Fianna Fáil spin doctoring to camouflage real truth on Housing Figures.
Independent Ireland TD Michael Fitzmaurice has taken Fianna Fáil to task over what he describes as deceptive housing statistics. According to recent data, despite the government's boasts of beginning construction on 60,243 homes, the actual number of completions in 2024 has in fact declined by 6.7% a total of 30,330 houses completed.
Fitzmaurice criticized the discrepancy, stating, "Fianna Fáil has been touting the commencement of 60,000 homes, but the reality is, 2024 saw only 30,330 new homes falling by 6.7% compared to the same period in 2023. The population continues to grow, and housing delivered declining, the spin doctors have been kept busy. It is simply not acceptable to mislead the public at a time when concerns around housing and homelessness is the number one issue in the country."
He further highlighted the misleading nature of the announcements, "This government seems more interested in headlines than in the actual welfare of citizens struggling to find a place to call home. The figures clearly show that we are not on track to meet even the most basic housing demands."
Fitzmaurice's remarks come amid a backdrop where housing remains a critical issue, with the actual delivery of homes lagging behind both public need and political promises. "It's not just about starting projects; it's about finishing them and making sure they're available for people to live in," he added, pointing out the government's tendency to inflate construction starts over actual completions.
The Independent Ireland TD called for a more honest dialogue about housing needs and delivery, urging a focus on real solutions and delivery rather than "political spin." We called for a housing emergency in our document and when we met with the Taoiseach and Tanaiste this government has an opportunity to tackle this crisis head on with real measurable, common sense solutions - unfortunately they have decided to continue on the same path, and even worse, tried to make failure look like a success. It is quite simply a disgrace"
