Richard O'Donoghue TD Officially confirms he will seek re-election for Limerick County
Independent Ireland is proud to announce Richard O'Donoghue TD as the party’s candidate for Limerick County in the upcoming General Election. Deputy O'Donoghue, co-founder and General Secretary of Independent Ireland, is seeking re-election to continue his work for the people of rural Ireland. His campaign promises to focus on critical issues including housing, planning, agriculture, and infrastructure, addressing the unique challenges facing Limerick and ensuring the region receives the support it deserves.
Elected to Dáil Éireann in 2020, Deputy O'Donoghue has a long-standing dedication to public service, having previously served on Limerick City and County Council since 2014. His commitment to the people of Limerick and his vision for a better future for rural Ireland inspired him to co-found Independent Ireland in 2023. He cited the need for a party that truly represents grassroots, people-first politics as his reason for establishing Independent Ireland. “I wanted to give people a real choice—a party that puts communities first and works to leave a better Ireland for the generations to come,” O'Donoghue said.
Independent Ireland Leader Michael Collins TD lauded O'Donoghue’s courage and vision in creating a new choice for the people of Limerick and beyond: “Richard O'Donoghue has been a driving force in Independent Ireland. His dedication to rural communities, his courage to stand up for what’s right, and his vision to create a genuine alternative in Irish politics have made a significant impact. Richard is deeply committed to the people of Limerick County, and I have no doubt that he will continue to make a meaningful difference.”
Michael Fitzmaurice TD also commended O'Donoghue’s efforts, saying, “Richard has shown remarkable leadership, not only for his constituency but for Ireland as a whole. He has fought tirelessly for common-sense policies on housing, planning, and agriculture—policies that address real issues faced by the people in rural communities. Limerick has a strong advocate in Richard, and we’re fortunate to have his voice in Independent Ireland.”
Deputy O'Donoghue’s first election outing with Independent Ireland was a success, as the party gained strong support in the 2024 European and local elections. Independent Ireland ranked seventh overall in first-preference votes, with 51,562 votes in the local elections and 108,685 first-preference votes in the European elections. The party elected 23 councillors, becoming the third-largest party on Galway and Cork County Councils.
As he seeks re-election, Richard O'Donoghue is dedicated to representing the interests of Limerick County and rural Ireland. Independent Ireland calls on the people of Limerick to support his campaign, backing his continued mission to bring practical, community-focused solutions to the Dáil and to create a better future for rural Ireland.
