TD Ken O'Flynn Urges Abolition of Means Testing for Humanitarian Assistance Program 28 January 2025 —
In the wake of the devastating Storm Éowyn, which has left a trail of destruction across Ireland, TD Ken O'Flynn is calling for the immediate abolition of means testing in the country's Humanitarian Assistance Program.
With property damage expected to exceed tens, if not hundreds, of millions of euros, O'Flynn emphasizes that now is not the time for penny-pinching.
"Storm Éowyn has wreaked havoc on our communities, leaving thousands without power and water," said O'Flynn. "The last thing our citizens need is the additional burden and hassle of means testing when seeking assistance to rebuild their lives. I imagine we are one of the only countries in the world who seeks to means test families whose lives have been turned upside down by storm damage"
O'Flynn argues that every individual, regardless of their financial standing, should be eligible for state assistance in these extraordinary circumstances. "Means testing will only serve to delay aid and add unnecessary stress to families already facing immense challenges. We must ensure that help is swift and accessible to all who need it." The call to abolish means testing comes as the country grapples with widespread infrastructure damage and the urgent need for relief efforts. O'Flynn is urging the government to act decisively and prioritize the well-being of all citizens during this critical time.
