TD Ken O'Flynn Commends An Garda Síochána on Crime Crackdown and Calls for Tougher Measures on Crime and Community Safety
Independent Ireland TD Ken O'Flynn has praised the exceptional efforts of An Garda Síochána in their recent crackdown on retail crime as part of Operation Tairge. The operation, which has resulted in over 8,000 arrests, showcases the commitment and effectiveness of the Gardaí in addressing crime across Ireland.
"The work done by An Garda Síochána in tackling retail crime is commendable," O'Flynn stated. "Their dedication and results demonstrate the importance of having a robust law enforcement system to protect our communities and businesses."
Supporting Community Safety
O'Flynn emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts between the Gardaí, local communities, and policymakers. He commended the Gardaí’s role in maintaining safety while urging continued support for law enforcement through adequate funding and legislative backing.
"We must continue to stand behind the Gardaí and ensure they have the resources they need to carry out their work effectively," O'Flynn said. "Whether it’s tackling retail crime, reckless scrambler use, or broader issues, stronger laws and decisive action are essential to protect our communities."
In addition to commending the Gardaí for their work, O'Flynn announced his intention to introduce a private members’ bill aimed at implementing tougher penalties for repeat offenders and increasing resources for crime prevention initiatives.
"My goal is to ensure that criminals face real consequences for their actions and that our communities feel safe," O'Flynn said.
Addressing Reckless Behavior on Scramblers and Quad Bikes
O'Flynn also highlighted the ongoing issue of reckless behavior involving scramblers and quad bikes, which continues to endanger public safety in residential areas.
"As we approach another year, it is disheartening to witness the recurring issue of youngsters operating scramblers and quad bikes in our neighborhoods," O'Flynn said. "This reckless behavior poses a serious threat to public safety, especially to children and the elderly."
O'Flynn acknowledged the recent legislative changes under the "Act to amend and extend the Road Traffic Acts 1961 to 2020," which empower Gardaí to seize and detain quad bikes and scramblers being used unlawfully. He urged local Gardai to rigorously enforce these regulations.
Safer facilities and more investment for young people
Coupled with enforcement of legislation O'Flynn highlighted the need for more funding and facilities for young people "There is a need for more facilities that provide a safe and supervised outlet for younger people"
This sentiment was echoed my Michael Fitzmaurice TD who has called for increased funding to be allocated for safe and supervised facilities: "We need to look at increased funding similar to the eight community projects recently delivered in Dublin and Limerick, to develop safe, supervised tracks for scrambler and quad bike use. Initiatives such as these channel the interests of young people into structured environments, reducing the likelihood of illegal and dangerous activities."
"We see the benefits of properly organised tracks where people of all ages partake in well organised competitions around the country. We must also recognise the use of quads in farming and their many benefits to the ag sector across Ireland"
Fitzmaurice outlined 4 key benefits of establishing designated parks and tracks for quad biking and scrambler activities including:
Reduction in Anti-Social Behavior: Providing legal outlets for these activities can decrease their occurrence in inappropriate public spaces.
Enhanced Safety: Supervised environments ensure adherence to safety protocols and minimise the risk of accidents and injuries.
Positive Youth Engagement: Structured programs can engage youths from disadvantaged areas, offering them opportunities to develop skills, discipline, and a sense of community.
Community Relations: Such initiatives can improve relationships between young people Gardai.
