"Enough is enough – it's time to face facts on illegal immigration"
"Enough is enough – it's time to face facts on illegal immigration"
Date: 17 February 2025
The reality of Ireland’s immigration crisis can no longer be ignored. In the past week alone, we have witnessed yet another violent incident involving an asylum seeker—this time ending in fatal consequences in the heart of Dublin. This follows a separate shocking attack in Stoneybatter where three innocent people were stabbed. These events, viewed by millions around the world, underscore the very real and dangerous consequences of the Government’s failure to implement proper immigration controls.
Independent Ireland has consistently called for a firm crackdown on Ireland’s asylum process, highlighting the risks of an unchecked system. Yet, time and again, these warnings were dismissed.
Ken O'Flynn TD from Cork North Central said "It is only now that the Minister for Justice finally admitted what we have been saying for over a year—“too many people are coming to Ireland to claim asylum”. This belated recognition coupled with an understanding that those involved have serious criminal convictions in other jurisdictions exposes the dishonesty of previous claims that “there is no such thing as an unvetted migrant.” The evidence is now undeniable."
Safety concerns ignored
"The Government’s complacency has led to parts of our capital feeling unsafe, with communities left to deal with the consequences of poor border enforcement. Independent Ireland and several elected representatives have spent over a year highlighting these concerns, only to be met with baseless accusations and political smears. Those who dismissed these warnings, branding legitimate concerns as “scaremongering,” must now face the truth: their refusal to act has placed public safety at risk."
€1 billion spent while Irish families struggle
At the heart of this crisis lies a gross financial injustice. This year, the State will spend €1 billion on asylum services, a staggering 54% increase from last year. This comes at a time when Irish citizens are told there will be no cost-of-living support from the Government, despite the ongoing economic strain on families. The idea that taxpayers are expected to foot this bill while struggling to pay their own rent, heat their homes, and put food on the table is a slap in the face to ordinary people.
The Government’s priorities have appeared to be to allow open-door migration policies continue unchecked while Irish people are left behind.
Time for real action
Independent Ireland is demanding urgent reform of Ireland’s asylum system, including:
A complete review of asylum applications to ensure those with serious criminal records or false claims be refused asylum and the appropriate steps be taken.
Tightening of border controls to prevent further abuse of the system.
An end to the spiralling taxpayer burden, with asylum accommodation funding redirected towards struggling Irish families.
O'Flynn concluded:
"The events of the past week have proven one thing beyond doubt—our warnings were right. The Government can no longer afford to ignore reality. Enough is enough. It’s time to act."
