IPAS Centre in Gaeltacht “Are they trying to destoy the language?” Cllr Noel Thomas
Cllr. Noel Thomas Opposes Gaeltacht IPAS Threat to Irish Language and Community Resources
Independent Ireland Councillor Noel Thomas has voiced strong opposition to the proposal of converting the Carna Bay Hotel into an International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre, expressing concerns over the potential impact on the Irish language and the deprivation of essential community facilities.
"The government absolutely should be taking extra cognisance that Carna and Cill Chiaráin are Gaeltacht areas," stated Cllr. Thomas. "Are they trying to completely destroy the language?"
The Carna Bay Hotel, established in the 1970s, has been a cornerstone of the local community, serving as a venue for cultural events, family gatherings, and social functions. Its closure to the public over the past three years has left a significant void in the community's social infrastructure. The nearest operational hotel is now 40 minutes away in Clifden.
"The people of Carna need that hotel back, they feel this would destroy the area." He urged the hotel's owners to reconsider their application to become an IPAS centre, stating, "They can withdraw the offer of the hotel as an IPAS centre if they want. That's what the locals want them to do."
A recent public meeting in Cill Chiaráin saw a packed attendance, reflecting the community's deep concerns. Locals expressed feelings of being ignored ,especially in light of similar situations in other Gaeltacht areas where the introduction of IPAS centres proceeded despite local opposition.
Cllr. Thomas criticized the government's approach, stating, "We have a weak, delusional government. They must act to stop IPAS centres being imposed on these small rural areas, particularly the Gaeltacht areas."
He also highlighted the lack of recognition for the government's obligation to protect the Irish language, especially when new arrivals are offered English classes in Gaeltacht regions, potentially undermining the linguistic heritage.
